PICO RIVERA – Ten years ago today, Marjorie Street became the scene of a massacre hatched by two teens against an unsuspecting family. The victims were stabbed and slashed while they slept.

The dead were 42-year-old Richard Flores and three of his children: 17-year-old Richard, 13-year-old Sylvia and 10-year-old Matthew. Flores’ wife, Sylvia, sustained 15 stab wounds and her throat was slashed, but she survived.

“It was horrific,” said sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Marsh, who was the lead investigator.

He called it one of the worst cases he’s seen in his 13 years as a homicide detective.

“It’s an emotional thing. I always think of little Matthew. I have three sons. When I saw that little boy, how brutally, savagely he was killed …” Marsh said.

Lt. Steve Sanchez remembers residents were uneasy after the murders.

“The community was concerned there was another Night Stalker,” he said.
